Rarity Retrospective: A Dog and Pony Show

Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life and today, we continue the Rarity Retrospective as I look at A Dog and Pony Show.  It's funny because while this episode is a Rarity episode, it's one that I usually forget about.  It's not bad but it's not one that I often come back to. With that out of the way, let's begin.

Episode Title

A Dog and Pony Show

I like this episode title as it's a reference to those dog shows that you see all the time like on Thanksgiving. And maybe it's just me but I feel like this title lets you know that you are in for a rather comedic episode.

The Plot

We open at Carousel Boutique as Miss Rarity is working on her latest dress and Sapphire Shores, the Pony of Pop shows up and wants Rarity to make her five outfits for her world tour.

We later see Rarity with the aid of Spike gem hunting for more gems that she can use on all Sapphire Shores'  costumes for her tour.  And Spike is going on and on about how great it must've been for Rarity to meet Sapphire Shores and we get a cute little montage of Rarity and Spike gem hunting.

And this is where the trouble starts as it is here, where we are introduced to The Diamond Dogs. Easily, the dumbest villains we've seen on MLP. And I don't meant that in I hate them.  They are portrayed as idiotic and they are mostly comedic foils for Rarity's actions throughout the episode. However, that doesn't stop our two leads from putting up a valiant fight against these nasty creatures but it's of no use as they capture Rarity.

But I'm sure that Spike is handling things just fine. He's a tough little guy. He can hang in there under any circumstance.

Oh well, he'll be fine. He just has to pull himself together. Though,  this explanation of what happened could've gone a little better. Though watching the others trying to save Rarity and be thwarted at every turn was a lot of fun.  As was the different imaginings they had as to how Rarity was handling the situation.

Though nothing tops Spike's fantasy of how he saves Rarity. That was just hysterical.

And it was nice to see Spike The Knight return in season 5.

This is ultimately what gets the ponies and Spike pulled down into the tunnel.

And thanks to Rarity teaching Twilight her gem hunting spell,  the girls' and Spike will be able to locate Rarity quite easily.  Yeah yeah, that's nice and all but this is where we get to one of Rarity's best moments.  "This is whining".

This scene showcases Rarity at her best.   She is using her wit to dupe those dumb dogs and to get them to do all the work. And the brilliant part is that they fall for it for a while. And Rarity gets to live it up whilst The Diamond Dogs do the work.

But it doesn't last for too long as the Dogs figure out, what is going on and put her back to work.  Which seems to work until they call her a mule and Rarity cries for real(?)

The Diamond Dogs surprisingly feel bad for Rarity and decide to let her go.  The girls and Spike come to save Rarity but she doesn't need saving and we get a sweet message at the end that just because someone is proper, that doesn't mean that they can't handle herself, when the situation calls for it.

Overall, this episode is a lot of fun and I'm glad that I went back and re-watched it.   I don't know why I forget about it, especially when it has one of Rarity's funniest moments in the entire series but there is a part of me that thinks that moment does overshadow the rest of the episode.

Characters

Main Character

Rarity voiced by Tabitha St. Germain

This is Rarity's episode through and through.  He is at her comedy best in this episode and every scene, we spend with her is a delight.

Supporting Characters

Spike voiced by Cathy Wessluck

While this most certainly isn't the first time that we've seen Spike's crush on Rarity in the show, this is the first time during this Retrospective that we've come across it and in that regard compared to the next episode, where his crush comes into play, we see how far he is willing to go for Rarity for a greater good and put his needs aside and help his friend. And it is a very noble gesture.

Pinkie Pie,  Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Applejack,  & Fluttershy voiced by Andrea Libman,  Asheligh Ball & Tara Strong

The others while not as important still had some great moments in this episode throughout but sorry girls, this was a Rarity episode through and through.  And she shined wonderfully.

Antagonists

The Diamond Dogs  - Voices Not Listed

The Diamond Dogs, while a lot of fun as antagonists,  I don't think we'll ever see them on the show again because I don't think there is anything more that could be done with them.  Because where we are now in season 5,  I think the show has moved past what type of bad guys, The Diamond Dogs were but for what they were, they were pretty funny and a lot of entertaining.  And hey, don't feel too bad as they've gotten appearances elsewhere such as their human counterparts appearing in the Rainbow Rocks short, Player Piano and in the  6th issue of Friends Forever, where Trixie teams up with Rainbow Dash, we meet a whole kingdom of Diamond Dogs.

My Final Thoughts

While this episode is a lot of fun and funnier than I remembered, I don't know if I'd call it one of my favorite Rarity episodes.  It's not bad and yes, I love the "This is whining" bit but I feel like there are better Rarity episodes out there such as the previous one or my favorite, Rarity Takes Manehattan but perhaps, it isn't fair to compare this episode to Suited For Success or Manehattan because those played more the heartstrings whereas this episode was more about the laughs. Even then though,  I do think Rarity's wallowing in Suited For Success is slightly funnier than "This is whining".   Not a bad episode and I did enjoy it but in terms of Rarity episodes, it's more middle of the road.  Join me next time as we look at....

Sisterhooves Social (And yes, that's more of a Sweetie Belle episode but Rarity does play a huge part in it, so I'm giving it some leeway).
