Rarity Retrospective: Sisterhooves Social

Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life and today, we continue the Rarity Retrospective with Sisterhooves Social.  Now in my preview for this episode last time, I did mention that this is more of a Sweetie Belle episode and I stand by that.  So I could have just moved on to Sweet and Elite and ignored this episode except that I think that it is important to look at the sisterly relationship between Rarity and Sweetie Belle.   With that out of the way, let's begin..

Episode Title

Sisterhooves Social

Nothing too special about this episode title, just refers to the event at the end of the episode.

The Plot

Like most Rarity episodes, we open at her place of business but there's something bit different here.  Fire!

And it turns out,  that it was Sweetie Belle was just trying to make breakfast as surprise for her big sister.

Which okay,  I understand that this has become a running  joke within the Brony community that Sweetie Belle can't cook.  And it is funny but there is something that I have to bring up, why did Rarity and Sweetie Belle's parents think it was okay to let a 8 - 10 year old girl cook in her sister's kitchen without her permission? And unsupervised at that.  Oh sure, the girls' parents are there but they seemed to leave Sweetie Belle to her own devices.  The girls' parent are going on vacation for one whole week and Sweetie Belle will be staying with Rarity during that time.  And this is where things come to a head.  Because after Rarity cleans up this disaster of breakfast, we see that it seems that Sweetie Belle can't do anything right in her big sister's eyes such as she washes a sweater of her sisters and  it shrinks after being left in sunlight.

And then Sweetie decides that she's never gotten in trouble for drawing and goes to work on drawing an image of her and her big sister.  Though she does take things a bit far, when she decides to use some blue gems that her sister had saved for a very important client.   Guess, she didn't hear about Sapphire Shores.

To be fair,  while Sweetie didn't know any better, she should've asked first.  And things only get worse for the poor filly after she cleans up one of her sister's messes.

After seeing a flyer for the Sisterhooves Social, Sweetie Belle think that this'd be a great idea but Rarity thinks it uncouth and this leads to a fight between the two, where they think they'd be better off as un-sisters.

After Sweetie Belle and Rarity have spent time alone, they come to a realization that they wouldn't be better off without sisters.  And that's when Sweetie decides to adopt Applejack as her new big sister because she knows what it takes to be a sister.

AJ talks to Miss Rarity and makes her realize that while he gives, she never gives in.  And we finally come to the Sisterhooves Social and Sweetie Belle and Applejack are going to run the race together or so the little filly thinks.

Sweetie runs the whole race and has the time of her life and in the end, finds out that the entire time, she'd been racing with Rarity.

And in the end,  the girls write a letter to Princess Celestia about it means to be a sister and how it's hard but worth it in the end. All in all, this is a cute episode,  It's decent but like the last episode, not one that I'd return to in the future.

Characters

Even though I did say that this was more of a Sweetie Belle episode, I 'm going to look at the characters in groups.

Sweetie Belle & Rarity voiced by Clarie Corlett & Tabitha St. Germain

This episode really showed how much these two clash but isn't that true of any pair of siblings.  They love each other but they get on each other's nerves but in the end, they'll always be there for one another.

Applejack & Apple Bloom  voiced by   Ashleigh Ball &  Michele Creber

This episode really highlighted the difference between these two pairs of sisters because AJ and Bloom seem to function as a unit whereas Rarity and Sweetie Belle are a bit more dysfunctional but it's a good contrast to show that no one family is alike.

My Final Thoughts

While this episode is a lot of fun,  it's not one of my favorites.  It felt more like a stopping point in this retrospective before we get to one of the truly good Rarity episodes. Join me next time as we look at that episode as I take a look at...

Sweet and Elite
