Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life. And today we continue our Rarity Retrospective as we take a look at the second Rarity episode of the series and her first solo outing as the main character. And yes, we are looking at what is easily considered one of the greatest Rarity episodes. And one that is put in her top two as the pinnacle of Rarity episodes. We are looking at Suited For Success. With that out of the way, let's begin.
Episode Title
Suited For Success
I love this title as it's twofold as it both refers to the dresses and the success that one can achieve.
The Plot
We open in Carousel Boutique as Rarity is planning her dress for the Gala and then Twilight and AJ come in as Twilight needs a button fixed on her dress for the Gala but Miss Rarity insists that simply won't do and decides to make a new dress for Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the girls.
Of course, this is after Dash crashes into Miss Rarity's business.
And this leads to one of my favorite songs, Art of The Dress. Which I know thanks to The Second Opinion is based on a song from Sunday In The Park With George. But even before that, I loved this song as it showed Rarity in her element making dresses that she loves making dresses and it is such a joy to watch.
And the dresses, she makes are gorgeous but her friends aren't fans of them. But Hasbro clearly was as they use these dresses in merchandising a bit.
And fans have even cosplayed in these dresses.
So yeah girls, you were clearly in the wrong here but Miss Rarity being the good friend that she is, takes her friends' words to heart and makes new dresses in the reprise of Art of The Dress. And here, you see the stress finally get to Miss Rarity. Oh and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this was the birth of one of the most popular MLP memes of all time.
And needless to say, these new dresses are just ugly. Here's what happens when you try to give people everything they want. And it doesn't help that they are on display at a fashion show for Miss Rarity's business with Canterlot elite, Hoity Toity there and yeah, girls don't ever do this again.
And this ruins Rarity in a state of despair as she feels that her business has been ruined.
The girls realize the error of they're ways and decide to make it up to her by finishing Rarity's dress and putting on a second fashion show for Hoity Toity showing the original dresses that Rarity made.
And the episode ends with Twilight writing a letter to Princess Celestia about not looking a gift horse in the mouth. That threw me off because they don't do that anymore. I love this episode and this is the episode, where I became a fan of Rarity. This is the episode that shows that Rarity does live up to being the element of generosity.
Characters
Main Character
Rarity voiced by Tabitha St. Germain
I loved Rarity in this episode as you see everything she goes through and how she is willing to put herself on the line for her friends and give them what they want. Even, when she knows the end result will be disastrous.
Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, & Applejack voiced by Tara Strong, Andrea Libman, & Ashleigh Ball
The girls meant well but they really didn't know what they were talking about. Except for maybe Flutters but even then, Miss Rarity is more of the fashion expert.
Hoity Toity voiced by Trevor Devall
There really isn't a whole lot to say about this character, other than that he lives up to his name.
Music
Art of The Dress
Thankfully, the official Hasbro Studios YouTube page has MLP music videos and this one unlike the soundtrack version has the whole song. It's interesting because in the beginning you hear the joy in Rarity as she is making the dresses but as her friends give her new and not so improved ideas, you see the stress get to her. Though, there is one thing I've always wondered about these lyrics from the reprise.
There is a part of me that wonders if Rarity is just imagining her friends saying all of this because of the stress making six new dresses getting to her. Now sure, we hear it in the voices of the rest of the Mane Six but that could just be Rarity hearing the voices of her friends. We may never know.
My Final Thoughts
I love this episode. This isn't only one of my favorite Rarity episodes, it's one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. Everything about it just comes together to deliver what I love about Rarity. It's show that while yes, she can be a bit high strung and over-dramatic, she does care about her friends and would help them with whatever they want. Join me next time as I look at...

"It needs to be about 20% cooler."

[Pinkie Pie]All we ever want is indecision
[Rainbow Dash]All we really like is what we know
[Twilight Sparkle]Gotta balance style with adherence
[Fluttershy]Making sure we make a good appearance
[Applejack]Even if you simply have to fudge it
[All sans Rarity]Make sure that it stays within our budget
