Rarity Retrospective: How Rarity Got Her Groovy Back (My Little Pony: Mirco Series # 3)

Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life and today we head into the world of IDW comics.   And we are going to be here a while as we have 4 comics to look at, one from the Mirco Series and three from the Friends Forever line.   Today, we are starting with  Issue  # 3 of the Mirco Series, How Rarity Got Her Groovy Back.

Covers

Cover A

I like this cover as it really evokes who Rarity is and her love for fashion and it does tie in nicely with the beginning of the comic.

Cover B

Cover B is perhaps my favorite of the IDW My Little Pony covers.  It's just gorgeous and there is something inherently cute about seeing Rarity in hippie clothing.

Staff

Writer

Katie Cook

Ah, Katie Cook.  One of the top writers for the MLP comics, she worked on the first arc of the IDW MLP series and a lot of fans love that arc.  And this comic is no exception as the writing is quite good here as well. Interestingly, according to the MLP Wiki, G.M. Berrow, who would go on to write the My Little Pony novels did some of the writing for this comic as well.

Artist

 Andy Price

If Cook is working on a comic,  it's more than likely that Price will be the artist as they are a go to team for the MLP comics and they typically work together on them.  And Cover B really shows what Price can do with the art in this comic but just take a look at this page to get an appreciation for his work.

It really pops and the nighttime feeling is evoked pretty well with the sky.

Colorist

Heather Breckel

The colors look really good here and they work well within the farm setting of this comic.

Letterer

Neil Uyetake

Noting too special to say here.  Nothing all that special was done with the letters, they were easy to read.

Editor

Bobby Cunrow

Unlike the last time, we looked at one of the IDW comics, where it dragged on and on, this one had a nice flow to it and it was a breezy read.   I never felt as though anything should've been cut.

The Plot

Rarity has just had a successful fashion show and all of the girls congratulate her on job well done.  Pinkie and Spike have planned an after-party that the girls head to, while Rarity stays behind to work on some last minute details for the upcoming Canterlot Fashion Extravaganza but by the time, she gets to the part, Rarity is whooped and can barely move.

And by the look of Rainbow Dash's face, the CMC weren't invited because they were serving hard cider at this party.   Sorry but I always make that joke, when that face. This is when Applejack remembers seeing an ad about a special spa that may just  be the thing that Rarity needs. Spoiler: it's not a spa.   We see Rarity, the next morning get ready for her week at Flax and Wheat's  New Age All-Natural Wellness Center, just as her valet, Flax Seed comes to pick he up. Oh dear lord, I can't stand this character. It take quite a lot for me to get annoyed by a character from MLP but Flax Seed is the most annoying My Little Pony character, I've ever had the misfortune of coming across.

I think the joke with Flax Seed (and I use the word "Joke" loosely) is that he is so spaced out  that he's like another realm man.  Oh my Celestia, I'm sorry but that is how he talks and it is so grating because every other word, he says is like and Rarity even points out that like is just a filler word.  And she's right. Yet, I'm in the minority here because the Brony fandom loved this dimwit, when this comic came out.   Maud, I get but him.... Ah well, after a three hour ride that is rather bumpy, Flax and Rarity arrive at the spa and Rarity comments on the rundown state of the place and other owner, Wheat Grass mentions that they're renovating.   Yeah, let's go with that. Though, Rarity is still looking forward to her week of rest and relaxation. Which actually never comes and we will get to that in a bit.

Rarity tries to adjust to the life of Flax Seed and Wheat Grass but the only good thing that she gets out of it is an all natural beauty care product.  Though that is enough to keep Rarity there as after two more days of farm life and manual labor, she demands her money back but Flax Seed and Wheat Grass had already spent it.  Whoospies.   We learn that Flax and Wheat made a terrible deal with Flim and Flam and our about to lose their farm to Filthy Rich as he plans to make their farmland, the site of a future Barnyard Bargains.  After Rarity learns of their situation, he feels sorry for the two of theme and uses her business know how to help them save their farm by showing them how to mass produce their beauty products from charging a higher price to showing them that producing more bottles in a day will make things easier.  They set up a stand in the hopes of getting a customer but the only customer, they get is Derpy.   This is when Rarity tells everyone on the farm to pack up as they're going to Canterlot and there at the fashion extravaganza, the beauty product sells like hotcakes.  And Twilight Sparkle writes a letter to Princess Celestia about what she learned from Rarity's story. Even though Spike points out that Celestia is  right there at the event and the comic ends with the princess reading the letter and stating the same thing. All in all, this is a pretty fun comic and I know it's considered the best of the Mirco Series by many fans,  I don't know if I'd go that far.

Characters

Main Character

Rarity

Rarity was in her element in this comic towards the end. True, it took a while to get there as most of the story was more a fish out of water story but once she got into the business aspect that was the Rarity, I know and enjoy.

Supporting Characters

Now while the farm had plenty of other characters, the only two I'm going to focus on are Flax Seed and Wheat Grass.

Flax Seed

Ugh... this character.  I cannot stand this character.  I know a lot of Bronies love this character but he is the one thing that brought this comic down for me because he's so annoying.  When even the comic points out twice that his use of the word, "like"  is annoying, there is something wrong. I'm sorry but I don't get the appeal of this character.

Wheat Grass

Sad to say, I don't remember much about Wheat Grass.  She seemed more down-to-earth but she was sadly overshadowed by the not-so-funny antics of Flax Seed.

My Final Thoughts

While I enjoyed this comic and do think it's quite a good read, I can't go as far as others in saying that this is the best of the Mirco Series, I would more say that Pinkie had the best Mirco comic.  It's still a really fun and captures the character of Rarity rather well.  Join me next time as I look at issue # 8 of the My Little Pony: Friends Forever series...

Reins,  Trains, and Carts with Wheels

Oh, it's a Rarity and Applejack story. Heh, heh, this should be interesting.
