Flutter Month (Yay!): Hurricane Fluttershy

Hello & welcome back to Flutter Month (Yay!).  Today, we are taking a look at what is easily Flutter's most emotional episode. This is Hurricane Fluttershy.    Let's get started.

Episode Title

Hurricane Fluttershy

Now, there isn't anything too particular exciting about this episode title.  It's just a reference to the tornado that the Ponyville pegasi are working on.

The Plot

To be perfectly honest, I had to watch this episode twice to figure out what I wanted to say on it. Mind you, it's not bad but I just couldn't figure out what to say about it.  The best way to sum up this episode is by saying that we go back to Flutters dealing with fear. This time, however, she is dealing with a fear of performance.  With that out of the way, let's begin.  We start this episode off with Rainbow Dash flying through Ponyville alerting all Ponyville pegasi of an emergency meeting at Golden Oaks Library.

But not all Pegasi show up as Fluttershy tires to hide in a tree.

Okay, that is just so cute.    We find out that the Ponyville Pegasi had been chosen by Cloudsdale to lift water up to said city and Dashie is in charge.  She wants to set a record of 910 wing power and a wind speed power of  over 1,000.   Though there is one pony that is nervous and scared about this.  That's Fluttershy.  We see the next day at the tornado training that all of the Ponyville pegasi are hard at work training save for Fluttershy.  Rainbow Dash heads to Flutters' cottage to check on her and  is feigning the Pony Pox to get out of training.   Though Dash sees through this and pours a bucket of water on her friend and  the dots disappear.

She then pretends that her wing is hurt but again Dash sees through this and we find out the truth.  We find out that Fluttershy equates this duty to performing and that scares her as we see in a flashback to her days at Flight Camp, where everyone made fun of her for being a weak flyer.

Shouting stuff like Fluttershy can hardly fly.  But after some convincing from Dash, Fluttershy agrees to help.  Later on, we see the pegasi,  Twilight, & Spike prepping for the tornado and Twi goes over a machine, an anemometer that measures the pegasi's wing power. Dash says that if each Pegasus can get their wing power to 10, they'll reach the goal.

Fluttershy goes up to fly and her wing power is only at 0.5.  Frustrated by this, she gives up as she hears the taunts from her fillyhood in her head.   A nice touch is that this also concerned Dashie is about her friend.  As she laments that she wishes that she knew how to pull Fluttershy out of the dumps.

Fluttershy gets some comfort from her animal friends and she decides to train with them to improve her wing power. Which by the way,  the training montage had some awesome background music courtesy of William Anderson.

If  I'm to be honest, this is both one of my favorite and least favorite moments from the show.  Le'ts start with the latter,  it's my least favorite because we will see when Flutters flies again,   her wing power was only up to 2.3.  An improvement but Fluttershy still didn't feel that was good enough and she is upset at herself.   I consider that part my least favorite because I don't like seeing someone fail knowing how much hard work, they put into something. But at the same time, I like it for exactly that same reason. Just because you train really hard, that does not mean you'll improve instantly.  The day for the tornado comes and 8 pegasi are at the hospital with the feather flu.    And it looks as though,   there aren't enough pegasi to lift the water up to Cloudsdale.   Twilight tells Dash to stop before someone gets hurt but Dash won't go down trying.  Fluttershy comes to offer moral support and Twi says that Dash could use her help.  So,  after some encouragement, Flutters gets in there and helps.   She starts to hear the taunts in her head but she says "NO!"

Fluttershy flies faster then she ever had before and she goes so  fast that she needs help stopping.

Which leads to one of my favorite lines from Rainbow Dash.

"Woah, girl take it easy!"

With that line and the way it was said, you can hear how proud of Fluttershy, Rainbow is.  In the end,  this is a great episode for Flutters as it shows that sometimes it's better to offer what you have, even if it's a small amount, then to not try at all.

Characters

Now this'll be broken down into Main, & Supporting. With that out of the way, let's begin.

Main Character

Fluttershy voiced by Andrea Libman

This was a great episode for Fluttershy.  It was a roller coaster of emotions for her but this was mostly a down episode for her but in the end, it worked.   Again as I said, Flutters learned that it's better to offer some then to not offer anything.  And that sometimes a small offering can make a huge difference.

Supporting Characters

Rainbow Dash voiced by Ashleigh Ball

To talk about Rainbow in this episode, I want to compare her character in this to Dragonshy. In that episode, she was angry with Flutters and was pretty much berating her. At the time, their history had not been set up but as the show went on, we learned that they went to flight school together and had a long history. And Dashie knowing about Fluttershy's flying issues, Dashie was much more supportive of her friend in this episode and this is the kind of relationship that I like seeing between these two.

Twilight Sparkle & Spike voiced by Tara Strong & Cathy Weseluck

As much as I like Twilight Sparkle & Spike, they really didn't offer much in this episode. Spike more so, then Twily. Twilight at least offered moral support but Spike, he really didn't do much and that is something that I've always had trouble with, regarding his character. And that may be why I'm not a big fan of Spike episodes. Moving on, I feel that even with as good as this episode was, Twilight & Spike served no true purpose in the episode.

My Final Thoughts

Other then my complaint with Twilight Sparkle & Spike, I truly enjoyed this episode. I think this is one of the best episodes of season 2, if not the entire series. It was highly entertaining and it very close to home as like with Putting Your Hoof Down, I've been where Fluttershy was in this episode. I've had those moments where I thought what I had to offer just wasn't enough. You look tense, you just need to...

Keep Calm and Flutter On
