To start off, let's look at the two characters in this song, The Boy and The Girl. No names or ages are given. Although we are told that the girl is just a child but that could refer to any age really. Here, I want to take a look at the lyrics and see what they say about The Boy and The Girl. Since The Boy is introduced first, we will begin with him.
He was different from the rest of the world
He chose the lovely every time
With a smile, he would bravely soldier on
Yeah, was that such a crime?
He did not wear cynicism well
He chose the lovely every time
And they cut him down, the world cut him down
Yeah being peaceful was his crime
Okay to start with, we are told that he isn't like the rest of the world and we always try to be happy and wear a smile. The two lines that I think are most important in understanding The Boy are "He did not wear cynicism well" and "...They cut him, the world cut him down". These two lyrics to me show that The Boy always wanted to look for the best in the world and you could also argue that the cynicism line to mean that he is a fragile soul that is bullied and doesn't know how to handle it but he just tries. Now I know I said that the song doesn't state an age but when I picture the song, I see The Boy as a young teen perhaps just starting high school and his smile is his sheild against the bullies. Okay, I think I set up The Boy enough. Let's move onto The Girl.
She dared to love everybody
Yeah, she was nothing but kind
And the world told her she was wrong
Yeah, There must be something wrong with her mind
And she was just a child amongst thieves
Just a child looking for love
Yeah all the grown ups in the world told her she was wrong
To believe in something we're all dreaming of
Perhaps it's just me but I believe that The Girl was inspiried by Fluttershy (Yay). Why do I say this? Well, we know from the song, she was nothing but kind. Fluttershy is the Element of Kindness in the show. "She dared to love everybody". Again, something that Fluttershy has exemplified. But let's try to look at The Gril not as Fluttershy but as her own character. Again, like The Boy, The Girll clearly does not have an easy life. I'd go so far as to say The Girl has it worse off then The Boy. Because as I said and this is just my assumption as it is never made clear but I beleive that The Boy is just dealing with peers whereas The Gril is having adults say these things about her. And that is honestly just cruel. A line that I just now caught while typing this up is "...She was just a child amongst theives". Again, I'm going to get a bit metaphorical here and say that this refers to her happiness.
Okay, now that I have gone over The Boy and The Girl, let's go over Equestira itself.
We're a long way from Equestria
We're a long, long way
We're a long way from Equestria
A long, long, way
These are the lyrics that are repeated the most as to drive home a point. Equestira in this song does not refer to the location from the show. As I thought when I firsted listened to this song. But that is not the case at all. For you see, it symbolizes an escape for The Boy and The Girl from their lives. To further siginfy this point think of a song where Heaven is repersented as an escape from life and just replace it with Equestira. Which brings me to my next point about this song that I want to make. Looking at the rest of the song, I'd argue that this is a plea, perhaps a prayer even from The Boy and Gril for a better life. I feel that this is best shown towards the latter part of the song.
So let's make love,
Let's make friends,
Let's take time to make amends,
Let's make the world more like Equestria
Now for my final point, I want to go back to The Boy and The Girl. I believe that the song made it clear that they have not had easy lifes but they will fight through it until things get better as we see here.
I will never give up the fight.
I will never surrender to the hate
Just because they may have a crummy life, that does not mean they are going to give up and mope around. They will work through and things will get better in time.
There you have it, I hope that you've enjoyed this special article. Peace!
