Trotting Towards Nightmare Night: Sirens (FIENDship is Magic # 3)

We continue our look at the Sirens as we once more return to the anthology miniseries FIENDship is Magic. We've looked at the Nightmare Moon and Queen Chrysalis issues from this series in years past.  Which will leave with only two more issues to look at in the future. Shame, that there was never a followup as I'd love to see one that focused on newer villains such as Starlight Glimmer, The Pony of Shadows, and Cozy Glow.   Ah well.  Interestingly,  this comic retreads ground that Rainbow Rocks covered as it goes over Starswirl banishing the Sirens to the human world.  Well, this comic was only released a year after the movie but that's also true of Tierk's issue and that one was able to explore his past in a more meaningful manner.   With that outta the way, let's start this review.

Cover

There's not a whole lot to say about this cover.  The artwork is pretty and it's neat to see the Sirens in their natural form compared to what we saw of them in the movie.  It's beautiful and very vibrant but there's nothing really dynamic about this cover.

The Plot

Yeah... out of the five issues that were released during this event, this one has the flimsiest premise.  The Sirens head to Canterlot to feed on the disharmony and negativity of the ponies there.   And well, there's a music competition happening in the capital city. That seems lucky for these three.  And at first, they're turned away by ponies that look like judges from Idol/Got Talent type shows.  Their music isn't working here on these ponies.  So instead, they realize that they need a new style and invent pop. Yes really!  Just go with it! All ponies fall under this spell except Starswirl.  As he's aware of what the Sirens are doing.

It's a bit funny to go back and look at what early depictions of Starswirl as he looks drastically different than what the show provided when we finally got to meet in season seven.  And he's perhaps one of the few good things in the comic as we see him put up a valiant effort in this giant spread that covers all different genres of music.

That's admittedly pretty neat and fun.   With no other decision left to make, Starswirl realizes that he has to send the Sirens to somewhere with no magic so that they can't harm anyone else and hopes others can succeed in where he failed.  By using the Crystal Mirror portal, he exiles them and we see them land in the human world looking rather modern and while this is barely any magic, Adagio notes that there is enough to keep their pendants working.

Yeah...I didn't really care much for this issue.  Of all the FIENDShip issues released, this was the weakest.  The story is basic and it is going for humor but it's not really that funny and doesn't offer a whole lot of insight to the Sirens that wasn't covered in the movie.  We see some things such as how Adagio and Aria get along more without Aria trying to undermine Adagio but other than that, I don't have a lot to say here.

Characters

The characters are fine and they can be fun but this comic doesn't do anything to expand upon their characters or what we knew of them.  They're fine but eh...,  the other issues do more with the villains they're about.

My Final Thoughts

It's okay but like I've said the other FIENDship issues are much better than this one.  Again, it's not bad and if you really liked The Dazzlings, maybe it's worth a read but even then, more Dazzlings appearances have come since this issue was released that are more entertaining.  Join me next time as we look at an actual Nightmare Night special from the main IDW series.
