Party With Pinkie: Pinkie On The One/Pinkie Spy

Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life and back to Party With Pinkie.  Well, now that we have covered all the episodes that I've panned to look at during this event, we enter the world of expanded media as we step through the Crystal Mirror to the Equestira Girls world to look at both the Rainbow Rocks prequel short and the Friendship Games prequel short that focused on Pinkie.

To that end, we shall start with Pinkie On The One.  With that out of the way, let's begin.

The Plot

The plot as for most the Rainbow Rocks shorts that focused on the Humane Six were about them finding their place on the band or getting the right instrument but these shorts did seem to have a sense of cohesion as compared to the shorts that came for the movie after Rainbow Rocks but we will discuss in the second review.  The plot of this short is a bit basic in that Rainbow Dash is looking for a drummer for her band during different school events and we keep getting hints that Pinkie is the perfect option especially towards the end, when we see them all at lunch and the girls are getting annoyed by Pinkie's constant drumming and want to find an outlet for all of her energy and that's when, Dash figures that Pinkie is perfect to be the drummer.

In all, this short isn't anything too special but as Les said in his comment for my review of The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, Pinkie herself is able to elevate what would be a rather basic story and make it entertaining.  And that is also true of her EQG counterpart because if this had been any other character than Pinkie, this short would have been extremely boring but Pinkie here was able to elevate to an enjoyable level by her crazy antics.

As I stated in the plot section, Pinkie was a lot of fun in this short and made what an otherwise okay short rather enjoyable.

Rainbow Dash voiced by Ashleigh Ball

Dash was quite a bit of fun in this short as well as you could the frustration in her getting annoyed at Pinkie's actions while she was being completely oblivious to the obvious but that is Dash for ya, she gets so focused on something, that she can ignore the things around her.

My Final Thoughts

I wouldn't call this one of my favorite EQG shorts but I do enjoy it for what it is.   There isn't much to it but having Pinkie in it already elevates the story to be entertaining.

Now, let's move onto Pinkie Spy.

The Plot

Yeah, I gotta be honest.  The first time, I watched Pinkie Spy, I didn't like it but I'm not sure why because I think this short actually takes better advantage of Pinkie's style than Pinkie On The One.  Again, another simple setup with Rainbow Dash spying on Crystal Prep before the Friendship Games and Pinkie shows up too and it seems like Pinkie is going to reveal that they are there but they go with the classic trope of the other person being the one to give away, their identity.   This short is filled with great moments such as the Dog Burglar with Pinkie putting on an EQG Spike mash and perhaps, what I now consider one of the greatest Pinkie Pie moments in all of MLP, the boom mic shot in this short had me rolling.

This short for me has more jokes that land and is easily the funnier of the two Pinkie shorts that we are looking at here. Honestly, I'd say that if you want a really good time with some great Pinkie Pie laughs, watch Pinkie Spy.

Pinkie Pie absolutely killed this short. This short was tailor made for her style of humor and it was the better for it.  The way, Pinkie's style of humor is used in such a short amount of time, while still being able to deliver a solid punch is astounding and that is what makes this short all the greater.

Rainbow Dash voiced by Ashleigh Ball

If I have one complaint with the short, it's Dash.  She's not bad and I understand the need of a straight person to offset the zany comedic character for the comedy to effectively work but compared to all the heavy lifting that Pinkie admirably did with the comedy in this short, I don't feel as though Dash brought that much to this short.

My Final Thoughts

For any Pinkie Pie fans, this short is absolute must-watch as it shows that even as a different version of Pinkie, her comedy can still be effective and we can see that even when limited to the runtime of a short, Pinkie is able to deliver a lot of great jokes.   Well, next time, we go back to Ponyville as we look at Pinkie's Mirco Comic.
