Hello & welcome back to Trotting and before we get into the Hearth's Warming celebration next month, I want to catch up on Rainbow Dash reviews. Thankfully, this first episode is a breeze to get through. What's next.... oh right, we will worry about that, when we get to it.
The Plot
Honestly, the plot here is pretty light. So, I won't be giving my usual breakdown except to say that I forgot this episode with one of the weirdest images ever.
Yeah, it was just a dream that Dash was having as her friends were having a pony and pets playdate. At this point in the series, Dashie doesn't yet have a pet. But she get the idea that she could have a pet and we get one of my favorite songs from the show's early days. Which we will do a deeper look at in the Music section as Fluttershy gets the idea to show Dash, all kinds of pets that could suit her. In the end, Dash decides to have a race and this is where the lightness I was talking about comes in as the whole race portion feels like one giant montage and you can kinda tell the outcome, when the Tortoise shows up. And yeah, there are some funny moments such as Dash telling Twilight that she would not make a good pet for her. (There is no way to not word that, weirdly)
Rainbow Dash: Alright, now these games will determine which one of you has the most important qualities I'm looking for in a pet. Speed, agility, guts, style. Coolness. Awesomeness. And radicalness.
Twilight Sparkle: Aren't those all the same thing?
Rainbow Dash: You would think that, Twilight. And that's why you would never qualify to be my pet.
But yeah, there are some moments in the contest such as the talent portion but when the actual race starts up and it becomes a pony version of 127 Hours with Dash's wing and you see all the other animals leave Dash behind and only, the tortoise stays behind to help her, you do get a good sense of what the outcome will be. I'm not complaining as it gave us Tank and I do love as we will see down the road with my favorite Dash episode.
And hey, there is a good lesson here for Dash as she learns not to judge a creature on appearances and we know from future episodes how much she comes to love Tank (he is the best MLP pet after all) and while their relationship got started on shaky ground, they both care about one another.
Not my favorite episode in the world but it's not a bad one either. It's one that is more or less, just there.
Character
Rainbow Dash voiced by Ashleigh Ball
It's fascinating to look back on this early episode as Dash really wanted nothing to do with Tank before he became her pet. Because he wasn't cool or awesome in Dash's eyes but his act of staying by Dash's side after what happened to her and rescuing her shows that Tank is very loyal. Makes sense and it is shown all throughout this episode that Tank has a willingness to try. Once again, that also makes sense for Dash's pet. As those are qualities that she has and if Dash wasn't just looking for surface level attributes, she would have picked up on those sooner.
Music
Find A Pet
This song is just so good, I don't know where I'd place it as while I love it, it's nowhere near my Top 10 but I love how it sounds like a Broadway style duet. This song is like a showtune, pure and simple. That is the best that I can describe this song. And hearing Dash's singing here reminds me how annoyed that we had to wait so long for a Dash solo in the show. Thankfully, we finally got one but this was a good appetizer for the mane course in that regard.
My Final Thoughts
Not a bad episode but nowhere near one of my favorites either but it did lay the groundwork for the most adorable pony and pet pairing on this show. Join me next time as we look at.... oh... oh... oh dear.....
