Princess Twilight Sparkle (with The Second Opinion)

Moviefan12:  Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life Ah, season 4 is upon us now.  And that means new episodes and my first time reviewing the episodes.  Now granted,  I'm getting a late start but I don't really care. However,  I am honored to be joined by a gracious guest here on Trotting as we go through season 4.  He has reviewed the first three seasons and Equestia Girls.  Please welcome,  The Second Opinion.

The Second Opinion: Thank you Moviefan, great of you to have me on the show. It makes that username of mine that sounds like a pretentious know-it-all actually fit... alright fine, fit better.

As he says, I've reviewed the entire show up to now in my series "From the Files of a Non-Brony" (I pride myself on my sense of security), the goal of which was to shine a light on this phenomenon and reveal both what was warranted and what wasn't. But though I came in looking forward to some tough criticism, I ended up siding with the bronies a lot more often than not, which made me want to keep seeing where this went. Now I'm just wondering how I let myself get to this, the point of no return...

Anyway though, the twist here is that I was less impressed with season 3, where the writing seemed to lose some of the nuance and maturity that made the last two more enjoyable than I was always comfortable admitting. (Granted, it gained some points back by giving at least 4 recurring characters nothing less than perhaps their best episodes to date, but the point still stands.) And while I didn't hate the polarizing Magical Mystery Cure as a whole, I was definitely more in the "backlash" camp. I thought it was a rushed story tied together by blatant and slapdash explanations from the writers, using the characters as mouthpieces to give them. This was doubly disappointing for making the main character's pivotal stage of growth seem more like a self-insert fantasy.

But then came the enjoyable Equestria Girls, which more or less seemed like a step in the right direction, so I really wasn't sure what to expect from season 4...

Moviefan12:  Completely understand as I had mixed feelings regarding season 3 myself but those feelings  are cropping more with the 4th season.   So,  starting  today,  we will be looking at the 4th season starting with Princess Twilight Sparkle.

Second Opinion: And with that title, it's safe to say the writers were still a lot more excited about that little change in the status quo than half the fanbase at this point. This may be a do-or-die moment in the series. Mind starting us off, Moviefan12?

Moviefan12:   Certainly.  One thing,  I feel should be kept  in mind  when looking at this episode is that Meghan McCarthy  came out  at the end of Magical  Mystery Cure,  that episode,   Equestira Girls and this particular  episode formed a trilogy  revolving  around  Twily adapting to princess-hood.  Now,  we will be using my standard review format,  of Plot,  Characters,  and Our Final Thoughts.  With that out of the way, let's begin.

The Second Opinion: My Pleasure.

The Plot

The Second Opinion: Part 1 opens with Twilight practicing with her new wings, having still not perfected her flying yet. She has a trick to perform in the annual Summer Sun Celebration, where her journey with her friends began, and not a lot of time left to get it down. But though the last episode already showed us the solution for when you’re not sure about your abilities – just tell Twilight that one of her friends needs help in the air and she’ll careso much about them that she’ll draw out her hidden flying talent, right? – they decide not to try this for one reason or another. Instead, Rainbow Dash puts her well-established talent at flying to use by graciously acting as her friend’s trainer, helping her iron out each ripple that comes when you’re not use to something and supplying her with positive encouragement. I know, what kind of screwed up message are they trying to teach kids?

Practice wraps up when the five who aren’t princesses have to return to Ponyville to prepare for the festival, as they did before. They take a moment to comprehend the fact that their relationship has changed with their growth, leading them down different paths. In fact, with Twilight now more than a little above them in status, the dynamic between them has changed, and no one but Pinkie Pie has quite adjusted to it. Rainbow is just a bit quick to point out that her dream isn't to be a princess, while Applejack and Rarity now want to call her “Princess Twilight,” thinking she should be less modest about the greatness she has attained. But Twilight isn't a natural born showboater, and her friends adding formalities just doesn't feel right. The only thing they all agree on is that their duties are pulling them apart more than they would like. Applejack points out that they’ll always be connected by the elements of harmony, and they all make plans to write to each other and meet up after the festival, but as her friends board the train and ride away, Twilight can’t help but feel that she’s missing out.

“Dear Twilight, you aren't missing anything. Your friend, Pinkie Pie.”

Moviefan12:  Though things don't remain well as after Princess Celestia checks up on her most faithful student.  The next morning, many problems arise.  Starting with the sun and the moon being in the sky at the same time and then Princess Twilight Sparkle learns that Tia and Luna have gone missing.  Meanwhile, back in Ponyville, the Everfree Forest is invading.

We see the various different ponies handling from Fluttershy trying to convince her animal friends that there is nothing to worry about, until she sees the vines.  The Apples try to weed them out.  And we get the first taste of Sweetie Belle's magic as her horn has gone haywire because of the invasion.  Meanwhile,  after learning of what is going on, and to try and find an answer,  our newest princess flies back to Ponyville.  We see that Twily is hesitant about this.  And I understand that they wanted to show Twilight Sparkle flying and she had to do it because the Friendship Express had already taken off but couldn't Twilight have just teleported herself back to Ponyville.

When,  there the friends  think that there is one person, excuse me being of chaos that is behind this. You all know who I'm talking about.

The Second Opinion: And so, the most memorable and popular foe of the pony gang makes his season debut… in the shower. (Singing “Winter Wrap Up,” what’s more.)

The last time we saw Discord, he’d reached a tentative understanding with the gang, with both parties agreeing that they’re happier as allies while realizing they’re not always going to see eye to eye. Since this was four episodes ago, so I’ll assume viewers remember it better than the pony gang, who go right to accusing him and threatening to blast him back to stone if he doesn't confess and fix everything. He insists he’s innocent, but he’s saved only by the intervention of Fluttershy, who spoils her friends’ fun by reminding them of “innocent until proven guilty” and all that. Grateful Discord closes his eyes and wraps his arm around her.

Twilight tells him to help them find the real culprit if he’s innocent, but Discord excuses himself on the grounds that he’s too offended by all the “hoof-pointing” from his so-called friends, and, well, that’s a legitimate response, actually. But he does point out that Zecora, who’s been driven out of the Everfree Forest by the plants, is entering stage right.

Zecora has a potion that gives the drinker transcendent sight and might allow them to see the answer to their problems. But she hasn't been able to animal test it before now, because it only activates if alicorn magic is used to turn it white. Twilight, therefor, has to use her newfound power to zap it and drink it herself, and, wow, I remember the days when being a princess just meant gushing about friendship and leading parades that sang for ponies to “behold” you. Now the only reasons to think Twilight’s great is because she’s successfully taking charge of Equestria on a dime, and leading the investigation of an invading threat, and dealing with Discord, and using her newfound power to solve the mystery, and… seriously, where was writing like this last season?

Moviefan12:  Ah yes, Zecora's potion, our plot device of the season opener. As it takes our newest princess back in time, first to the origin of Nightmare Moon.  One of many things that was teased at Comic Con and this was teased and that is how Pt. 1 ends.

To quote Dr. Horrible, "Now the Nightmare's real"  Hey, when else, would I be able to quote Dr. Horrible on here...

Oh right, forgot about that.  Back to this episode,  we continue  our visit to the past of Nightmare Moon with Twilight at first, not realizing she is in the past and that Princess Luna has once again turned into Nightmare Moon. Well,  she has been ignored since season 2 episode as she hasn't had much to do since Nightmare Night.   And then we finally get to see Tia wield the Elements of Harmony and use them against Nightmare Moon.  Now this scene is a conflict of emotions for this Brony.  I find it both awesome and sad, at the same time. Awesome in that, it was something I've wanted to see for the longest time but sad knowing what was coming.  And yeah, they do the whole fake out thing where Twi thinks her beloved teacher had died, only to find out that Celestia is still alive.  Kinda corny but we knew that Tia wasn't dead.

The Second Opinion: Very true. Heck, you could even argue that the fake out helps drive home the fact that Luna was playing for keeps against her own sister. Now the fact that the entire sequence was punking us, on the other hand, is the corny part that some probably didn’t see coming. I wouldn’t even mind if it tied into the story better, but as is, we think we’re in the middle of a well-staged, critical moment in the series, and it turns out we’re in the middle of a well-staged flashback that has little to do with anything. There’s nothing here that couldn’t have been established in the next flashback instead.

Anyway, regretfully taking out and firing up the original elements of harmony, Tia banishes Tamera to the moon (I know, but I couldn’t resist), and Twilight snaps out of it. It turns out everything she said, and sobbed, still came out in the real world, leaving everyone but an amused Discord very worried about her. But since she didn’t solve the mystery, she takes another drink and goes in for round 2.

This time, she witnesses Celestia and Luna defeating Discord together with the elements, even as he laughs in their faces, munching a bag of black pebbles. (Seems he never learns.) She then gets a second vision that brings us to the point, witnessing the two princesses getting the elements from the tree of harmony to defeat Discord. Celestia states that the tree will still possess a magic to control and contain what grows around it, which brings Twilight to the conclusion that the tree is under attack in the present. The six then set off into the forest, pausing only to reminisce about the last time they ventured in together to find the elements. (And to telegraph another of the morals they’re going for, when Twilight brings up how it was foolish of her to originally go after the elements without her friends.)

Moviefan12: Indeed, that was a great callback to the pilot.  And we get to experience some new dangers from the Everfree.  Something that I like about the forest is that at least for throughout the most of the series, it was filled with interesting threats and the ponies were hesitant to enter the forest but as we'll see in the next review, that is chucked out the window.  Back to this episode,  one great threat such as the crocodile made of rocks.

Seeing the various  dangers,  Applejack suggests that  Twilight Sparkle return to Ponyville because Equestira will need a princess in case, they can't find the Royal Sisters.  LOOK APPLEJACK, I understand where you are coming from but... Twilight Sparkle has proven on occasion that she can handle herself in extreme situations. And furthermore you useless farm pony, who should be relegated to background pony status, Twilight Sparkle as she pointed out was the one that saw the Tree of Harmony.  And while yes,  Rainbow Dash does make a joke about this,  give your friend a little more credit then that.   Twilight reluctantly returns to Ponyville and Discord gets in her head about her returning, and we get the first Brony meme of season 4. The staff.  Oh, god, the staff.  It was everywhere, the Sunday after this episode aired.   Why,  do Bronies latch onto the weirdest things?

Though, it does look rather derped.   Because it has Derpy eyes but still, what was the fascination with this staff?   Back to the moment,  Discord successfully convinces Twilight Sparkle to return to the Everfree to help her friends.

The Second Opinion: I suppose it’s an interesting twist that Discord is the one who points out why Twilight shouldn't have turned back, except her doing so was forced enough to make me think that anyone could give a reason it was stupid. Haven’t we established in at least two of the other two-parters that it’s a princess’s duty to confront whatever menaces her subjects? Don’t they need Twilight to use the elements of harmony, meaning her departure utterly cripples their best chance? In fact, while I’m at it, we have another place for your complaint about Twilight forgetting she can teleport, Moviefan, because when the crocodile comes at her, we’re supposed to think her failed attempt to fly away was all she had. (At least you could argue that we've never seen her teleport between towns for her trip to Ponyville, so there could very well be a limited range on that. Why she doesn't go for it when she only needs to move a few feet is beyond me.) Actually, I know you said you weren't helping, Discord, but would you mind going along just to make fun of what a bad plan this was some more?

The five arrive at the bridge to the old castle where they defeated Nightmare Moon and spot a cave at the bottom of the ravine underneath it. But they have no idea how they're going to get down there. (I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of Pinkie Pie.)

Meanwhile, Spike climbs a tree in a successful attempt to spot the other five for Twilight. But when he turns around, she being attack by the plants, which have now sprouted leaves that shoot slow-acting knockout gas. Spike, deciding he’s not packing what it takes to fend off her attackers, makes a break for the five friends, cementing that this is, in fact, the first thing that happened after Twilight decided she wasn't too fragile to risk. I, for one, am outraged that she didn’t try her wings again! Good thing they remembered that before, or I’d be thinking the writers were on a “helpless” kick with Twilight…

Anyway, after finding the tree and failing to free it from the black vines strangling it, the five get Spike’s message and go take down the ferns, Twilight waking up just in time to help them. They reunite and affirm their need to stick together. Back at the tree, Twilight realizes it can never stand against these strange plants as is, and the only way to give it the power to overwhelm them is to return the elements of harmony. This is a big sacrifice, and Applejack reminds us of the buildup she’s been spinning this whole time with her line on how the elements are what “keep us connected, no matter what,” so Twilight takes the opportunity for a speech on how their friendship is more powerful than any magic. Time to cut some weeds.

Moviefan12:   When they return to the tree,  her attempts to reach it are futile as the vines continuously attack her.  Remembering what Princess Celestia said,  Twilight realizes that the only way to save the tree is by giving up the Elements of Harmony.  Applejack, in a moment where I actually like her doesn't want to as she feels that the Elements connect them as they are what brought the six together but Twilight says it wasn't the elements that keeps them connected but rather their friendship.  So, they agree to give up the Elements and out comes a box with 6 keys.  Thus setting up, the first over arching story arc of the season.

Returning to Ponyville,  we find out that it was Discord that was behind this all along.  If anyone was surprised by this revelation, you deserve this...

Not to say it was a bad twist but it was kinda obvious.  Apparently long ago before the Royal Sisters defeated Discord the first time,  he had planted the seeds to drain the Tree of Harmony of it's magic in hopes of capturing the princesses.   And then the episode closes with a Summer Sun Celebration.  All in all, this was a great way to open season 4.   In my opinion, probably the best  season opener since The Return of Harmony.

The Second Opinion: Jeez, and I thought I was tough on these ponies. I mean, I guess Applejack said some dumb stuff, but it’s not like…

Erm, where were we? Alright,  I guess I have mixed feelings on the twist myself, though for different reasons. It was played well, but wasn't the point of the scene where they summon Discord that they shouldn't have suspected and pistol whipped him right off the bat? Why not make it something Nightmare Moon did in her flashback? Then that one would've had a reason to be there.

Anyway, despite my misgivings, Princess Twilight Sparkle is a strong two-part episode that actually answers most of my complaints about Magical Mystery Cure. But if I remember how Trotting Through Life works, we’ll be able to flesh that out later, because now it’s time for…

The Characters

Take it away, Moviefan!

Moviefan12: Thanks, this'll be broken down into Main, & Supporting.  With that out of the way, let's begin.

Main Characters

Princess Twilight Sparkle  voiced by Tara Strong

Moviefan12:  There is a reason that I listed Twilight as Princess Twilight Sparkle. As this episode is all about Twilight accepting her new status as a princess.  Going back to what Meghan McCarthy said about Magical Mystery Cure and Equestira Girls makes me look at the season 3 finale, the movie in this light as a trilogy.  Magical Mystery Cure is step one in Twilight becoming a princess.  That episode completes the arc that was set upon her over the course of the first three seasons.

Going back  to the first lyric from "Celestia's Ballad"

You've come such a long, long way

This line signifies the end of Twi's first arc but as we also see, it's the start of a new story arc for our newest princess.

Now, how does Equestira Girls come into play. Well, twofold, the prologue shows Twilight being apprehensive and scared of her new role. Especially with the wings.

So, in many respects this is a good epilogue for Magical Mystery Cure.  Now, what about Canterlot High,  while there, you see her become more assertive and become a better leader, what a princess should be. Now, what about this episode.  well, this episode also shows Twi's uneasiness in her new role and that is understandable. She hasn't been a princess for very long but at the same time, this episode also shows Twilight Sparkle continuing to grow into a better leader.

The Second Opinion: As he says, together with Magical Mystery Cure and Equestria Girls, Princess Twilight Sparkle forms the story of Twilight’s progression into a princess; she clears the bar to get there in Magical Mystery Cure, overcomes her fear of the change now that she’s made it in Equestria Girls and successfully takes up the mantle here. But on her account, Princess Twilight Sparkle is the most satisfying chapter by far.

Ironically, it’s after Twilight become a princess that seems like herself. Magical Mystery Cure seemed to want nothing from her, content to heap praise on her for valuing friendship in the style of Yu-Gi-Oh!. This episode is all over what it takes for Twilight to become a princess, hardships and all. She utilizes her OCD side to plan her responsibilities to a T. She worries about going in a different direction from the rest of her friends. She goes through an awkward phase in becoming the motherly Princess Celestia’s equal in stature. And she steps up to the plate and takes charge of the kingdom in a time of need. The episode puts us in her corner right from the start, and when love and friendships are reaffirmed at the end, there’s no reason not to believe it.

Discord voiced by John de Lancie

Moviefan12: This was also a great episode for Discord as we get to see him mess with and test Twilight Sparkle.  Discord is no longer evil but he walks a fine line between being good and not knowing what he is going to do next.   Now, this isn't the last time, that we see Discord messing, testing Twilight Sparkle as that'll appear again later this season.

The Second Opinion: Good or evil, Discord was always one of the best parts of his episodes, and he continues to be so here. But I’d be lying if I said he wasn't starting to seem just a little bit domesticated. Also, what was the deal with pistol-whipping him like that the whole time?

Supporting Characters

Applejack voiced by Ashleigh Ball

Moviefan12:  Now, while this episode did focus on the friendship of the Mane Six, it seemed to greater emphasis on the friendship between Twi and AJ.  Which makes me further speculate that the show is insisting that Applejack is the closest out of the others.

The Second Opinion: Actually, I've kinda had the sense of that too. Applejack was the first friend she met, the first to get her own episode, and the first Twilight freed from Discord’s spell (not to mention the most emphasized), and they sort of go together as the most mature members of the group. I can’t say I object, as the show otherwise hasn't seemed as interested in what it can do with Applejack since season 1, and her solid, earnest presence really shouldn't be for nothing.

Rarity, Fluttershy,  Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, Andrea Libman, & Ashleigh  Ball

Moviefan12:  I've grouped the other ponies together because unlike farm pony, they seemed to take a backseat to the story. Not that they don't have their purpose but Twilight is more important to the story, then they are.

The Second Opinion: True, but we do get a few key moments worth a mention, such as Rarity suggesting Twilight should strut a little more, Fluttershy standing up for Discord alone, and Rainbow Dash helping Twilight learn to fly. And Pinkie Pie is still gleeful and funny as always.

Spike voiced by Cathy Weseluck

Moviefan12:  Spike per usual,  showed  why is such a great companion to Twily. He is always her number one assistant and willing to stand by her side.   And he also, had one of my favorite gags in the episode.

The idea of seat-belts existing in Equestira is a nice thought and this gag just made me chuckle.

The Second Opinion: Not to mention that he gets to help with the adventure for the second time now, after sitting out the first two season openers. I also liked the gag where he’s still checking Twilight’s list in his sleep.

Moviefan12: Alright, it's time for...

Our Final Thoughts

Moviefan12: All in all,  I enjoyed this episode immensely.  As I said up top, this is probably, one of the best season openers.  The best since The Return of Harmony.  It had a great story,  great action and just felt intense all the way, through.

The Second Opinion: I have to agree. This is a very good season opener that definitely tops the last one. For the issues I mentioned before, and the fact that it doesn't liven up its more reflective tone very often, I’d probably still rank it fourth among the five two-parters, but not by much. Not only did I have fun with it, it actually has me optimistic about what this show can do again. But it seems that’s where we hit another snag. You say the rest of season 4 isn't always living up to it, Moviefan?

Moviefan12: That's a topic for future reviews.  This season fluctuates, when the episodes are good, they're great, but when they're bad, they're Bats.  (Yeah, we'll get to that one).  As for this episode, I greatly enjoyed it. Join us, next time as we take a look at..
