Hello & welcome back to Trotting Through Life and we continue A Dash of Awesome as we look at one of Rainbow Dash's best early episode, Sonic Rainboom. With that outta the way, let's begin.
The Plot
We open the episode with one of my favorite Fluttershy moments.
She is practicing her cheering as Dashie will be competing in the Best Young Flyers Competition in Cloudsdale. Afterwards, we see Dash unsuccessfully attempt a Sonic Rainboom and that ends up with Dash crashing into Golden Oak Library after the girls had finished cleaning it up.
Dash explains what the competition is, and that the grand prize is a day with her idols, The Wonderbolts. Rarity sees that Dash is nervous and urges Twilight to find a flying spell. We later see Dash and Rarity arrive on Cloudsdale and see some old bullies from Dash's and Flutters' past start to attack Dash with an old nickname of Rainbow Crash. And it still seems as though Dash is ready to compete as soon as the non Pegasi ponies show up, and we get our first look at Rarity with her wings.
And people complained about Twilight's Alicorn design. And Twi gave the other ponies a temp spell that would allow them to walk on clouds. Seeing as there is still some time before the competition, so we get a sweet tour of Cloudsdale. And Rarity starts to show off her new wings and that starts to get Dashie nervous. And much to the shock of Dash, Rarity decides to enter the competition. And we see that Dash is getting more nervous by the second about this event as she keeps trading numbers with other ponies. This right here exhibits her fears perfectly.
It gets to the point to where Dash and Rarity have to compete together and Dash's nerves still have the best of her. That is until Rares tries to shine her wings on the ponies and well, I guess she never read the Equestrian version of Icarus.
Dash sees this and leaps in to save her friend after the Wonderbolts are knocked away by an oblivious Rarity and as she goes to save her friend, she is able to perform the Sonic Rainboom.
And with that, we get to see Dash win as decreed by Princess Celestia. So, Dash gets to spend some time with her idols, and Rarity realizes that her showing off made Dash nervous. Overall, this was a good episode from the show's early days.
Characters
I'm only going to focus on Dash and Rarity. So, with that outta the way, let's get started.
Rainbow Dash voiced by Ashleigh Ball
This was a really good episode for Dash as it showed that while she tries to be awesome, she is vulnerable and we get to see her fears get the best of her. As that is something that any performer will face, the fear that they'll choke and they aren't good enough.
Rarity voiced by Tabitha St. Germain
I love Rarity but yeah, her actions weren't the greatest here in this episode but they served a good point as to show that while Rarity had the best of intentions, she got wrapped in her new shiny things and they became more important to her than why she originally asked Twilight to use this spell.
My Final Thoughts
I really enjoy this episode, even if it does seem a bit simple compared to the episodes of later seasons. Episodes like this one tend to show why Rainbow Dash is such a fan favorite character as she is easily, one of the most relatable characters on MLP. And for anyone in the performing industry, they've been where she was in this episode. Join me next time as we look at....
May The Best Pet Win
